[NTLUG:Discuss] OT Hard Drive Recovery

It seems in the past I have read a discussion on this list that describes
taking a dead drive and
replacing the circuit board with one from an identical drive.
  If the internals of the drive are OK, should this just work? Is all the
information for the
partitions stored on the disc itself?
  I have a drive on the way from ebay and hope to try this in a day or two.
