First, I must apologize for not getting back with this reply quickly.
Things have been very busy. My wife and I returned from a trip and we
find ourselves behind in everything. So many things to do.
Thanks to all those who replied about my questions having to do with
seeing two apparent connections to the Internet from my wife's PC. I
can find only one ethernet port (part of the motherboard) and two
firewire ports. I don't see anything that might be a wireless device
with my limited knowledge of what such a device might look like.
I have learned a bit as a result of your assistance and realize I have
a lot more to learn.
I conclude that the second apparent connection (eth0) that Knoppix
V5.0.1 seeing is a firewire device. In addition, the firewire device
is not making a physical connection or wireless connection that I can
determine. The good news is that when I opened the PC I did not see
any unexpected devices. I guess the only other thing I might do is
take my PC to a ham radio friend and have him scan for wireless
transmission.
Please, if you think I may be mistaken in my conclusion, let me know.
Again, thanks. I really appreciated the assistance.
The PC is a HP pavilion.
Here are the results of using the suggested commands. The results
from 'dmeg | less' are only shown in part where eth0 and eth1 were
referenced.
dmesg | grep eth
eth1394: eth0: IEEE-1394 IPv4 over 1394 Ethernet (fw-host0)
eth1: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xa800, IRQ 23, 00:11:d8:3e:9b:a9.

ifconfig | less returns with the two items, the eth1 (not eth0) and
loopback information. An Internet address is assigned. The search
for the hardware associated with 00:11:D8 returns...
