Kyle,

I worship at your alter. I owe you a thousand beers. Problem solved!

For those of you following this thread, if any are left, I have outlined
Kyle's exemplary help below.

Then by private mail on 7/10/06 he wrote:

        *** Authentication Certificate ***

dude, was my email unclear? you don't have to do static routes.

        Kyle

Now isn't that kind? He sensed that I didn't understand his message and
followed up.

I replied that I didn't have libnss_wins.so on my computer, that Samba
was working fine without using static IPs and that I couldn't
find /lib/libnss_wins.so in any of the Ubuntu Breezy repositories. (I
knew that RPM had a "what provides" feature, but couldn't find such a
thing on apt-get or Synaptic.)

Kyle responded:

        *** Authentication Certificate ***

        Hi Bobby,

I googled Ubuntu Breezy, and someone said libnss_wins.so
was in the winbind package, instead of the samba package. Do
        you have that installed?

In smb.conf, it is the "wins server" directive. It may
        not be
required if samba knows your subnet. "man smb.conf"
so after installing winbind, just try "ping [windows hostname]"
        first.

I was terse, but gave enough key words to google it. I'm
        sure
        there's a howto out there.

        Kyle

There he goes again. He could have told me to Google it. He was
right, /lib/libnss_wins.so was provided by winbind. After
changing /etc/nsswitch.conf as Kyle suggested and installing winbind,
everything worked just like I wanted.

Thanks to all the members of this group I now have my network working
just like I want it to, I think. As times goes by I will probably have
more questions and that you won't feel that I've had my full share of
help from this group, even though that is certainly true.

Bobby
