	Mplayer and VLC are good media players for Linux (I use VLC). VLC is cross platform and works for Windows ( and I think Mac OSX as well). Both will play most media "out of the box". 

	I think both players have browser plugins too, through I only use them to watch DVDs and downloaded clips.

	One general problem though is playing WMV3 files (Windows Media something version 3). MS has not released the specs, so the only way to play those types of files on Linux is to install a Windows dll and have Mplayer/VLC use that dll. Depending on your distro, you may need to recompile your player in order to make it use the dll.
