Thanks for all the feedback!
In short: Your response about the ASUS MB problem shed the light. My MB
is a ASUS.I switched back to IDE and all is well.
I had 2 reasons for my question: I need to build some new servers and I
was considering SATA RAID for cost effective hot swap setup AND my
workstation hasn't been the same reliable workhorse that it once was
since replacing my IDE drive with a SATA drive.
I found that I *am* using an Asus p4p800 MB with my SATA drive. I have
had this MB for about 1 year but ONLY used IDE with it. Well that drive
failed and I replaced it with a SATA drive, copying my data from the IDE
to SATA.
Then, my machine, running Centos 4, would give me a journal error and
put the drive in read-only mode after running VMWARE for awhile. This
error only seemed to occur when I ran VMWARE and it seemed to happen
consistently.
The ONLY change I had made between the old IDE and the new SATA was a
fresh install of Centos on the new SATA. I copied my home directory from
the old drive to the new drive so my VMWARE vm was the same. With a yum
update, the OS was in the same state as on the IDE.
So that left me trying to determine what had changed. I needed VMWARE
for my job and the ONLY thing that had changed was SATA. I put an IDE
drive in, installed the OS, copied my data over, and rebooted.
I started up vmware at 1pm yesterday afternoon and it has been running
fine ever since.
Thanks Again,
Dave
