[NTLUG:Discuss] Re: Do LUGs Still Matter

Dennis,

Fair warning....just some of my views with NTLUG. If you had read the
slashdot.org article, you would have seen my not too flattering post
although I didn't mention any specific LUGs in it. I've always had
issues with this LUG....anyhow, you may wish to skip the rest of this
E-mail.

If you're still reading, here are some of my quick views: All I can say
is I hope you have better luck than I did in getting NTLUG to step
forward in doing something to promote Linux in the world-at-large. Back
in the day, I was trying to volunteer and get this club involved in the
Linux Certification movement (it was a golden opportunity at the time,
and probably could still be)....the response I saw was to invite other
people who run a Linux certification effort at a high cost to present to
NTLUG, rather than to have a free program available to the membership.
I've seen similiar on other projects, and my impression is that this
club has become a clone of the NTPC Users group (MS products mainly)
where their main focus is to see what new thing they can BUY for their
machine rather than to use their machines to full advantage...much less,
be educated on how to even use their machines. NTLUG is a little
better, but not by much in my book.

Also, I've noticed over the years, that unless you run the Novell
distribution of Linux (formerly SUSE), this club does not support you
very well....and if you run a source distribution (Gentoo) like I am,
nobody in this club gives a damn about anything to be contributed from
that. So, that is why I sit here mainly monitoring the NTLUG maillist,
but I don't go to meetings anymore as, quite frankly, I find NTLUG to be
a lost cause. I only monitor the NTLUG maillist in hopes of seeing some
positive changes someday (I know I tried to help a while ago, and all I
accomplished was to be 'outted' from the group, so I know never to do
that again).

And, no, I don't sit on my laurels either. I am the founder of a good
group chat channel group called #linuxfriends on OFTC that has some
really good people running debian to gentoo & beyond, that do help each
other a lot. We have a project on Sourceforge.net that we hope to have
finished & ready by 3rd quarter of 2006. In addition, I have a few
other projects on Sourceforge.net as well that I hope to have finished
within the next year or 2....so, as you can see, I am not just sitting
in the easy chair griping about no action on the Linux front.

At any rate, I just thought I'd jot this little note to you....I'm not
entirely sure why other than to just let someone know why I have the
stance on NTLUG that I do....so there it is.

Have a great 2006,
--Spicerun
