Thanks for the reply..no I never had to unmount it.
For some reason the line didn't clear from /etc/fstab this time.
I removed the offending entry and rebooted and all is good.
I know I should unmount, but it just works without having
to do that as long as the file manager is closed and i'm not in that directory 
when I unplug it.
