Windows has a nasty option that will hide certain files and file types
by default.

Use Windows Explorer and view the Desktop or C:\ folders.

Click on Tools and select "Folder Options".

Select the tab "View" and check/uncheck the boxes to show all extensions
and to show all files. This combination should show everything and not
hide a file by the truncation of same base name and different extensions
(alvin.dll, alvin.exe, alvin.sys => alvin) as well as typically hidden
files.
