Actually smbfs is completely independent of samba.. and that's the
main reason why things might not work there :)  This is why the
Samba team is pushing CIFS over the older (non-Samba) smbfs.

The 2G limit inside of SUSE's smbfs in particular was a bug and only affected
certain versions of SUSE.  Since smbfs is in inside the kernel, a
kernel recompile was needed to eliminate the problem... or just use
a newer version of SUSE.
