Yes and no.  You will likely need to create a
2nd xorg.conf configuration to handle 1024x768 (native
for the projector) or you can use twinview (if
Nvidia) to configure the external monitor at
1024x768 and leave the laptop with its native
rez.

Not sure.. but my biggest problem with AMD
laptops is the lack of Nivida support.  There are
just too many ATI gotchas.  With that said,
there are some that work quite well with the
open source radeon driver (usually the newer
ones that cause most of the problems).

Switching the display from the laptop screen
to the external display is problematic on
the majority of laptops out there.
