Don't forget that there is the additional issue of how do you
automatically unmount things. You don't want things to get
corrupted. ;->
This is not only an issue on Linux, but Windows as well.
Windows puts an icon on the lower right of the bar. You're
supposed to unmount.
On most GNOME implementations, it is an icon on the desktop.
There is a tie-in with the FHS 2.3+ of the /media directory.
Red Hat typically uses the automounter (autofs) of the
kernel, along with a solid hotplug/udev setup. I'm not an
expert yet, but I have made modifications for everything from
the storage area of my Treo 600 to an external IEEE1394
FireWire drive I use with my Sony DCR-TRV120 Digital8.
I'll get around to documenting the FC3+/RHEL4+ approach
sooner or later.
