Some things show up in the GIMP under the View/InfoWindow option - but
the camera type (for example) didn't appear there.

There is a program called rdjpgcom that displays embedded comments - but
it didn't produce anything useful for any of my photo's that I tried it on.

On the very few occasions I've needed to find this stuff, I just did:

   strings file.jpg | more

...it's not great - but it'll tell you anything that's in ASCII text
in the header.  Here is what I got from one of my recent photo's:
