In-a-nutshell, host adapters/RAID cards that do SAS can "get
SATA for free." Going the other way, no, not all SATA
controllers will do SAS. But most RAID controllers will
already have a "host adapter" like intelligence, so any true
hardware SATA controller will probably also do SAS.
At the device end (e.g., disk, SAS hub, etc...), that's where
the cost is. So SATA drives will continue to be lower cost
than SAS drives.
