did you look at the ( if you have one ) /etc/X11/xorg.conf or
/etc/X11/xfree86.conf ( or whatever x config file you have)
and see if you can find what info was added for the monitor.
My LCD has:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
ModelName "LCD Panel 1600x1200"
HorizSync 31.5 - 90.0
VertRefresh 60.0 - 60.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
which works for me. I have:
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1600x1200"
EndSubSection
to give me the resolution I want.
the /var/log/Xorg.0.log ( or whatever x startup log you get )
will tell you if you specify a mode the monitor doesn't support.
