Looks like you have several useful methods suggested already but I thought
I might add one more. Try issuing the X-Windows size parms at startup time.
Sorry I don't have time to give it a try myself. IIRC, it's the -geometry parm
and is something like: xeyes -geometry 800x600+0+0 (width x height and
then coordinates of top left corner). See:  "man X11".
