[NTLUG:Discuss] DSS streaming server on FC2 questions - possibly a little OT

Greetings.

I have a DSS streaming server running on FC2. I have been having some
problems with people outside our network being able to connect. We are
running a stream that is around 600 to 800kbps, which is sort of high, but
only one client is allowed to connect at a time. The stream is that high
because we are trying to get the best quality possible.

We are on a MCI/UUNET T1.

Can anyone recommend any linux tools that can evaluate the "path" between my
location and our end user? Specifically, a tool that can measure the
sustained usable bandwidth between locations? I may be interpreting the
data wrong, but I can't find where traceroute or ping can perform this task.

I can tell that the end user is connecting by using netstat, so I know they
are actually using the correct url.

I also realize that I am going about this test backwards. It would be great
if there was some open source and open platform application that the client
could install on their computer, and "ping" our location to determine the
bandwidth available. The application would have to work on all os's,
however.

There has got to be something out there like this. Just don't even know
what to call it, or I could do a search.

Forgive my ignorance.

Thanks in advance,

Monty
