After doing some searching, I found the following article:

It turns out I had to enable internet connection sharing for my
verizon service, and tunnel it through the VMWare virtual device.
This is a Windows 2000 built-in feature. I used VMNet8. I booted up
Linux in VMware and was able to pull up a non-cached web page. I am
very happy now. The thought of installing cygwin just wasn't
appealing to me (although I downloaded the iso).
Well, in case anyone encounters this, this is what you have to do.
