Howdy,
I think you are putting the cart before the horse. Pick an
application you want to work on and see what language it is written in.
Having a real task to motivate your learning helps a lot. If you are
working on an application or program you really want to improve, you'll
learn the language.
And, if you want to pick the language first, don't pick Perl. It is a
very useful language and a good one to pick up later. But, it is almost
a write-once language and not a good place to start, I think.
