[NTLUG:Discuss] Sorta OT: dvd

* Watch DVD in bed without disturbing spouse.

* Kids can watch DVD in back of car when on long
   road trips.

* Can search and index individual segments of video from
   DVD's as reference material.

* Not all DVD's are entertainment - I have SigGraph DVD's that
   I refer to on my PC at work.

* My video camera writes mini-DVD's - and I edit them on my PC.

* Better movies than the airline are showing on long flights.

* When flight/train/bus is delayed, can entertain self.

* Can watch one movie whilst other members of household are
   monopolising the big screen TV.

* Can handle low brain level activities such as email and online
   chat whilst watching a movie that's not too intellectually
   challenging without going cross-eyed looking at two screens at
   once!  Since hardly any modern movies are intellectually
   challenging, this is a more do-able activity than you might
   otherwise expect!

* Can use PC as an audio system to listen to DVD's such a live
   rock concert performance whilst working on PC.

But most of all:

* "Just because".

All media of all kinds should be readable by my computer.  I don't
have to know WHY I need to do it but when the time comes, I'll want
to have the tools at hand.  If Windows machines are able to do it and
Linux can't then that's one more reason for people not to switch.
