I don't think the K6 and K6-2 are the same as the Mobile K6.
I have an old K6-2 500MHz system at home also (not a Compaq, but a
beige-box assembled from Fry's parts many years ago) and although I have
never tried to install the particular distros that Fred mentions, I've
never run into a distro that wouldn't install on it.
It all comes down to what compiler optimizations and CPU target the
kernel, glibc, et al. are compiled with. Often distros will have a
different kernel package for different CPU targets
(kernel-x.y.z-athlon.rpm, kernel-x.y.z-i686.rpm, etc.), but the correct
one should be chosen automatically by the installer program. I'm not
familiar enough with Mandrake or it's installer to give a more
definitive answer. Is there an option to specify what the architecture
is? Maybe install to the lowest common denominator (i386) and then
upgrade/change as necessary later?
