There's always the eepro100 modules instead of e100.
I know earlier version of Cisco's VPN client for linux would
not work with the e100 and they told you to use the eepro100
modules instead.

I'd definitely make sure that you aren't using acpi (acpi=off) and
if you are running SUSE.. make sure you eliminate the evil desktop
option from the boot line as well.
