[NTLUG:Discuss] FD 2 - RPM update

I have to recommend a reinstall vs. trying to update. Although it's been a
long time since I tried a cross-distro upgrade, I learned my lesson the hard
way and haven't ever tried it again. IMHO it's just not going to work. You
will be up and working far, far, faster if you reinstall.

The core problem is that the packaging of 'stuff' is different. FC will
have an xxx and xxx-devel package, while Mandrake doesn't and vice versa.
Some things will have different names. This means that there just aren't
'upgrade' packages for some stuff that will work - and the conflict
detection in rpm won't let you do without. Unless you --force and that's
just a bad idea.

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] FD 2 - RPM update

I am trying to move from FC2 to Mandrake 10.1 and my system jams at looking
for RPM packages.
I got this Jam earlier also when I was trying to update my RPMs.
I did the initialise and rebuild database commands but still a problem.
I think I want to physically delete the database and rebuilt but cannot find
where it is. At least did not recongnose it by name in all the dirs shown at
Whereis rpm.
Is this the problem? Any suggestions ?

Thanks
Pervaz Allaudin.
