Unfortunately, this is the attitude of many large companies, mine
included. In some ways, you can't blame them. For example, one of our
training machines had some cracker software loaded on it by one of our
new hires. It was not clear if it was intentional or not since it came
from off the Internet, but as soon as it was discovered, an announcement
was made that ANY unauthorized software found on our machines was
sufficient cause for dismissal and would be carried out immediately.
On the other hand, it really chaps my buns when you change your
wallpaper, have some problem you need the helpdesk for and find them
saying, "Have you changed your wallpaper?" I'm sorry, but if you have a
network problem or application problem, changing wallpaper is NOT going
to be the cause, but you have far too many idiots working a helpdesk
that don't want to do their jobs just because you made "a change to your
desktop configuration". I kid you not, I've actually heard helpdesk
people say they wouldn't support the platform if ANY changes were made
to the configuration, even cosmetic ones.
