I am betting that 192.168.1.254 was assigned by the router that removed.

Try this:

host www.google.com 192.168.1.254
host www.google.com 204.127.202.4
host www.google.com 216.148.227.68

I bet the first one fails.  I would take the first line out of resolv.conf.
