It's certainly true that the freeware ATI drivers are FAR behind
the times and don't work at all well on recent ATI hardware - don't
even consider using them for 3D work.

The ATI binary-only OpenGL drivers (get them from the ATI web site)
are kinda patchy (both under Windows AND Linux) - in the course of
using them I've found quite a few bugs.

I wouldn't recommend buying an ATI card (get nVidia) - but if you
already have one, it should work under Linux with the closed-source
drivers from the ATI site and it'll be about as error-prone as it
is under Windows.
