I hope you are talking about the firewall on a machine inside your 
network without a routable IP address.
If that is the case and you have a firewall/router connecting your LAN 
to the Internet, then leave the workstation firewall off or open ports 
137,138, and 139 and possibly 445. See the link below for a discussion
