Some good comments on this thread. I started on Red Hat. Later, I
moved to Mandrake... extremely easy to use, but it bugged me that they
often insert Mandrake in the rpm title and it breaks some rpm issues.
Admittedly, you could simply rename a lot of them, but not something I
was interested in doing.
As far as community support, I going out on the opinion limb to say that
the largest communities are probably Debian and Fedora, so support will
be there for you. Mandrake Club isn't too bad, if you don't mind paying
the small yearly fee.
I went to Gentoo a few years back and have recently moved to Debian, and
I can't say I'll ever go back. If you're looking for a
super-easy-to-install version, you might consider downloading Morphix
(http://www.morphix.org), which is a customized derivation of Knoppix.
One of the Morphix developers had created Intellibuild, which allows you
to fully customize your liveCD. let me know if you're interested, and I
can customize one for you with whatever programs you like. It's based
on debian unstable, but I have yet to encountered any serious issues.

Still I do almost nothing useful such as compiling C programs I have written, but am getting close. Do use X graphics for documents and spreadsheets for routine things. Never contact Red Hat for help. Occasionally update.

Would I have months of learning another version? Clearly most in NTLUG are far ahead of me. I am retired, so being competent in Linux is not as important as it is to you who make a living with it. I would like to do more, though.
