The first thing I would check out is credit by exam
and I would also ask Universities what credit for your
business training and experience they would be able to
give you. Those things could drastically shorten your
timeline for a degree.
Also, remember that the university that you start with
does not have to be the one you graduate from. The U
that grants the most credit for your lifetime learning
could be the best start. If you can transfer those
credits to another, more respected school, you may
have made a good move. Amberton University in Garland
has a pretty generous attitude toward giving credit
for knowledge gained at work, but I don't know how
well those credits transfer.
Certifications are useful too, but as long as HR depts
are looking for that Bachelor Degree, they won't
nedessarily unlock those doors.
Despite comments that the I/T industry is "toast",
there is a future there. Most people do not realize
that Info Tech has always been a cyclical business.
In the 80s there was a period where they were hiring
warm bodies and teaching them programming inside their
business. Then in the early 90s you had to have 2-3
yrs experience for entry-level jobs. Just a few years
later, they were back to hiring warm bodies and
issuing HB-1 visas.
Companies cut _way_ back on I/T during slumps in the
economy. Then the backlog needs to be cleared out.
New hardware and software has to be installed. Custom
applications that were put off are ordered. The
dot-com bust was just a sanity check. The internet is
not going away. It is only getting bigger, better,
and starting to charge more.
A couple of years from now, we will look back and say
that we had a few scary years but things are great
now. Only the oil prices are worrying me right now.
Best wishes,
Brian
