Unfortunately apt doesn't just work, particularly in multilib systems,
where you may have the same package installed as both x86_64 and i386. apt
gets very confused with these types of things, but luckily people are aware
of it, and have it on their todo list.
When you do have to use Red Hat or Suse, or any other RPM based distro, yum
offers similar functionality to apt, and actually works with multilib. you
can grab it at most repos, or at http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/
Seth does a great job of addressing issues if you run across them.
