[NTLUG:Discuss] Can one boot from an external Hard Drive ?

I have a Western Digital external USB port 120 Gig
hard drive. 

I use this drive primarily for backups. 

Is it possible to boot my toshiba laptop ( model
1115-s103 ) from a partition on this external hard
drive?

I would like to put Linux on a partition on this
external drive.
