Hello Wayne,
    Well yes, Java is copywritten by Sun, but Sun allows MS to use 
version 1.3.9 and below of Java I believe. So therefore, MS uses those 
Java-VM's and tends to make the later versions incompatible at best. I 
can't say I've ever had problems w/ Java and IE but I rarely use 
anything but small little applets like speedtests etc. MS can get away 
with anything, haven't you figured that out ;). Good Luck
