I'm not sure about that error you're receiving, but I went to rpm.pbone.net and found this: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/972698/com/mozilla-1.6-0.rh80.dag.i386.rpm.html
for you. It's a mozilla 1.6 rpm for RH 8, should work for you, at least I would assume so anyway. Good luck, sorry I can't help you w/ your tarball issue.
