RH9 came out b/c they did a bunch of upgrades including GNOME 2 and glibc 2.3.  there were so many significant changes from 8 that they didn't .1 it, they rolled a new release.

Both are kernel 2.4 based, but IIRC there were some significant differences between glibc 2.2 and 2.3, so I am not sure your app would run on anything but RH8.
