Update: The test server I was using to send email was excessively slow
(it took 3hrs to transmit) So, in the case of #2, messages are actually
being sent.
I am still having an issue with #1.

This would be the smrsh in the /usr/lib/sendmail.d/bin dir?
It was apparently done during an earlier effort.

It was done by the setup scripts.

Several times, both as root & mailman to make sure they were working.  This is one area where I had difficulty originally.

Yes, after the first error messages, but before I went and checked the subscription pages.

Yes.  The administrator pages work, which they don't when the daemon is not running.
