I have setup a few systems like this and it was relatively easy using the
primary NT machine as the domain controller. You do need to add users to
the local machine with the useradd command. You can still auth them against
the PDC however. The other thing you can add using winbindd is one stop
auth for pam based apps using the NT domain. I have set this up to ease
administration of users allowing them to change their passwords via NT and
have the password change for their e-mail as well as with a development
groups passwords for ftp, ssh and cvs. I can't imagine anything that you
wouldn't be able to do but it might take time on your part to read up on it
so you can deal with unexpected problems you might run into while
configuring or possibly by mis-configuring at a later time.
Its great when you get a setup like this working and the only system
downtime is while the PDC reboots.
If you require more specific information please provide what you would
specifically like to do.

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] Samba 3
Hi all,
Here at my work I've been implimenting linux were it has been a
appropriate alternative for new services. (email, intranet, wholesale
ordering system, data warehousing for report generation) Currently we
have 2 WindowsNT 4 servers. One of the server has Windows applications
on it and will remain a Windows server just upgraded to a newer version
of Windows. The second Windows server is our main file server and I'm
looking into the possiblility to use Linux and Samba instead of paying
to upgrade both servers to Windows 2000 or Windows 2003. I'm looking
for any experience anyone may have in using Samba for file services in
the workplace. Is it possible for Samba to replicate user accounts
from a Windows Server? I want the home directories on the Linux
server, but I need to have the domain accounts managed from the Windows
server. I do not want to have to create a user on Windows, then
create it again on Linux and Samba. I've used Samba before but it's
been at least 2 years and It was for home use only.
If anyone has any experience or can point me in to some information that
can knows how to accomplish what I'm wanting to do.
Also, several months ago someone noted a spyware removal program for
Windows. I have a friend that just ask me about this, but I could not
remember the programs name or were to get it. If someone remembers what
and were it was, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Dave
