No, not really. I have to be root to make it work, the process is more than 3
steps and kppp works just fine after I go through the bs. I would like to know
a) what happened b) how to fix it.
After sending the first post I tested the process step-by-step to get the
correct sequence. I have to (as root) invoke ifup ppp0. Pass or fail, I then
have to ifdown ppp0, edit /etc/ppp/peers/ppp0 to be sure that it says
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0"
then invoke ifup ppp0 again as root. After it connects, drop it with ifdown
ppp0 and continue with init 5 (on Mdk that is multiuser with x). Or I can boot
all the way to init 5, log in as a user, then su root and perform the above
steps. Pain in the butt!!!! And I don't have a clue as to what is missing. I
have traced the dialup process step-by-step (or so I thought) from start to
finish and I cannot figure it out. Maybe it is because it is a maze of scripts
calling scripts... it's easy to get lost in the loop.
Obviously something is hosed.. some config somewhere, maybe. Probably has
something to do with a fight between Mandrake Control Center settings and
LinuxConfig.
