I have the same trouble.  I've used mplayer/mencoder, and fmtools (I
have the AverTV Studio card, which has an FM tuner).  I get audio, but
it's insanely quiet, almost inaudible.  

At first I believed it was the card, but I found Google reports of
others with similar volume problems.  Now I believe it is a driver
issue.  

I'd love to hear from anyone who has found out what the answer is.
