I'm not sure why it's not there, that's just the way the partitioner did
it when I installed this 40 Gig hard drive. I suspect it was something
like this though. This machine is old enough that the bios would not
recognize the drive as it is...it's too big. I jumped through all kinds
of hoops trying to get it recognized...tried it as a slave to the 6 Gig
on the 1st IDE controller, nothing. Tried moving it to the master on
the 2nd IDE controller, same thing (I had no idea the bios couldn't
recognize it at this point). I tried moving the CD-ROM around, same
problems. I finally settled on leaving the new drive as the master on
the 2nd IDE controller and the CD-ROM as the slave on the 1st after
someone explained to me that Linux would be able to see all of it even
though the bios couldn't.
So, I suspect that it came up as hdc because it's the first drive on the
2nd controller. Is that the way Linux recognizes the drives? Where the
CD-ROM is controlled is where I suspect hdb would be.
