XFree86 allows you to have multiple monitors, so you can watch a
recorded tv show on one monitor while doing computer stuff on the other.

webvcrplus (http://sourceforge.net/projects/webvcrplus) offers a nice
set of php scripts that lets you easily manage your recording of tv
shows.  Since setting it up, my kids and I have started to watch "This
Week in Baseball" -- something I hadn't done in almost 30 years.
