Do you have the 9.0 CD?  If not you can download and burn a Install CD. 
  Boot the CD and at the first prompt select F1 (IIRC) and then enter 
rescue on the command line.  You'll end up running a kernel from the CD 
that you can mount the HD partitions on.

I'm not sure I'd try and read a 9.0 partition with a 8.1 distrib.  IIRC 
the 8.1 distrib was not a 2.4.x kernel?
