Make it "vga=normal" and you'll avoid the framebuffer issue, which has caused 
several people grief.  After that, you need to run /sbin/lilo.

Interesting problem...  Does /var/log/XFree86.0.log (or the .old version) have 
anything helpful in it (e.g. warnings or errors {ignore font dir messages})? 
You might also check ~/.X.err for messages.
