I have never seen a situation where the i686 was required, as all it did
was include optimized support for the i686 processors.  I will keep that
in mind when I am doing the install tonight to see if that makes a
difference (the machine is an Athlon, but the only Athlon optimized code
they have is the Athlon version of the kernel.)
