don't know... hostid on my box shows:
[root at jws_rh root]# hostid
a8c002c8

info hostname says that hostid is determined
off of the ip address. I see that you have a
name assigned... maybe the networking stuff you
had problems with caused a problem with the hostid
command. Just curious... what do you use the
hostid for?

huh? I've installed things hundreds ( thousands ) of times
and never had to use the command uncompress. What are you
installing? something.tar.gz or something.tgz? I've always
used the command tar xvzf something.tgz ( the z handles the
commpressed file ) or tar tvzf something.tgz to display the
contents. What are you looking to uncomprss.

I've used redhat for years.... I'm thinking that the problems
your having might not be redhat per-se.....
