You might consider using grub instead of lilo.  With grub, you don't have
to remember to run a command after modifying the boot list.  You should
be able to accomplish this in a pretty clean manner that way.  You could
even have a symbolic link named vmlinuz.active that you just point to whatever
kernel you want to use.  Make vmlinuz.active the default target for grub,
and all you'll have to do is change the link and reboot.
