Suse (when I installed it) set up the frambuffer support by default, so
that it booted with all the graphical and pretty stuff (kind of annoying
since it did not add anything besides color and a border when I did it,
as compared to adding more lines for more info on one page or somethign
useful, but I digress)

So when it boots, it will pass info to the kernel, via lilo or grub,
that says what visual setting to use.  It may not work with the new
monitor.  Check the config files for which ever boot loader you are
using and see what options it is adding.

All this is before X starts, so its not going to matter what the X
settings are.
