[NTLUG:Discuss] Notification of downed server?

I have an APC SmartUPS 1400 that powers my servers. I have connected the UPS
serial cable to one of my servers. I then have apcupsd running on that server.
There is a script that runs when events happen to the UPS. One of them is
"onbattery." You can configure that script to send out an email when the ups
switches to battery. I have it send an sms message to my cell phone via email.
It will also send me a message when power is restored.

The apcupsd will shutdown the server if power falls below a certain % left.
(Configurable, of course)
I also have the apcupsd daemon running on my other servers. They are set up as
slaves that talk to the server connected to the UPS. The other boxes will get
shutdown commands when the main server decides to go down.

It all works pretty well. If you have any specific questions, let me know.
You can check freshmeat for software that will work with non-apc brand UPS boxes.

Hope this helps.

I was curious as to what, if anything others do about being notified if
the servers go down due to power outages etc. Living in Texas during
spring we have many a thunderstorm and blackouts for short periods of
time. What type of technologies are available to notify the admin when a
server goes down? All of our servers are on battery backups so is there
a method, maybe emailing me that the server is on battery power and will
 be going down?
