[NTLUG:Discuss] Virtual consoles and X

Hello all-

I have a question regarding the virtual console mechanism with
regard to the GUI interface. I'm running RedHat 8.0. Here's my
problem: if I am logged in at tty1 and I start X, everthing
works just fine. From within the GUI, I can ctrl-alt-F2 to tty2.
Again, no problems. But when I alt-F1 back to tty1, X has
terminated (with a bunch of error messaging). I can start it
again no problem. I have seen this exact same behavior on two
different machines. 

At first I just figured "that's the way it is". But I noticed on
another RedHat 8.0 machine that I work with (albeit a much more
powerful server, at work) that I can switch back and forth
between the GUI and virtual text consoles no problem. Any idea
what I'm missing? I can provide the error messaging if that
would be helpful.
