OK, I'll bite.  You never said why you need to restart X "without logging
out".  <gratuitous jab at M$ Windoze>Of course on my high end geek system,
restarting X and logging in takes only a few seconds - shorter than a
"dynamic" change under windows</end jab>   There are lots of facilities for
changing X on the fly.  You know about resolution changes now, well I've
seen several ways to run different color depths too, from an extra X server
to within the current server.   The traditional X utilities allow you to
change just about anything an X server knows about: xset, xsetroot,
xmodmap, xauth, xrdb, xcmsdb...
