[NTLUG:Discuss] corrupt file?

My setup:

Mdk9.0
Kmail

My inbox file is 46952690 bytes and appears to be corrupted, in that I cannot
copy it with the cp command without getting "cp: reading `./inbox':
Input/output error". How can I go about fixing it?
It is supposed to be text... what would be the best way to remove (or convert)
the non-ascii characters? Or is this an inode problem?

I am not sure what happened... it might be because of shutting the box down
after it froze up on me, a la windows. Still don't know exactly what caused
that, either. 

While you are making helpful suggestions, how do I do a surface scan on the
drive? Without wiping out the system, that is.
