It's already been done if you have a Live! Drive.   I'm currently modifying
Stephen Evanchik's livetools (
http://www.clarkson.edu/~evanchsa/software/livetools/index.html) to work
with my audigy 2 platinum.

There are several others like rcenter and liveplugin (liveplugin.sf.net)

I've also used IrMan (An IR receiver sitting on a serial port) which has an
xmms plugin.  There's also a LIRC plugin

With no hardware you can control xmms from any web browser with
xmmsd.sf.net.

An almost embarrassing number of options really (palm, phone, X10
,realmagic...)
